Stories Become Data: How Stories and Visual Narratives Can be Collected as Data Through Co-Creation Process

Stories Become Data is an interactive digital environment that invites participants to share their own stories to a collective narrative through writing, drawing, and animating. Since 2019, the project has been recognized nationally and internationally including CAA (College Art Association), Austin Design Week, Outlier Data Visualization Society, MODE (Motion Design) Education Summit, and International Digital Storytelling Conference in the UK.

I was invited to host workshops at the CAA Annual Conference organized by SAC (Services to Artists Committee) [3] in 2020 and 2021 : one was at the Hopkin Gallery at the Columbia College of Arts in Chicago, Illinois and the second was at the Museum of Arts and Design [3], New York (virtual due to the pandemic). CAA is the largest and most prestigious academic art conference in North America and is the preeminent international leadership organization in visual arts. Additionally, I was invited to present the project at the MODE (Motion Education Design) Summit [7]the Outlier Data Visualization conference [5] organized by the Data Visualization Society and the 9th International Digital Storytelling Conference at Loughborough University in England. The MODE Summit is bi-annual motion design conference for design educators, and in 2021,  the summit was virtually hosted by the National University of Singapore, Massey University, Kent State University, and Lesley University in Boston and Singapore. The Outlier Data Visualization conference reflects the global visualization community and celebrates unique visualizations that are outside of the box.  The International Digital Storytelling conference is part of a multi-institutional, multinational, two-year process and program–organized in collaboration with the esteemed Smithsonian Institution (US), StoryCenter (US), University of Maryland Baltimore County (US), Montgomery College (US), and Patient Voices (UK). As a collective effort from the community, I was invited to contribute a book chapter about the project. The chapter will be included in the book, Story Work for a Just Future: Co-Creating Diverse Knowledges and Methods within an International Community of Practice, published by Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press in the fall of 2021.
