Placed: A Digital Placemaking Platform to Collectively Archive Our Stories of Marginalized Communities with Augmented Reality (AR)

Placed is a multi-disciplinary project between design, digital media, anthropology, sociology, and history. In essence, Placed eliminates a monopoly on history by those who have the most wealth and power in society and instead gives a voice to the marginalized and forgotten members of communities who have their own stories to tell and share. 


The project has been recognized nationally and internationally and among these highlights are The IxD (Interaction Design) Award [1], The AWDA (AIAP Women in Design Award) [4], and Cumulus (International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design, and Media). The Interaction Design Award is the most prestigious international award for interactive design with less than 10% of submissions selected. Fifteen international jury members from eight different countries reviewed the project. The award ceremony was held in Milan, Italy in February 2020 during the International Interaction Design week.

The AIAP Women in Design Award is another highly selective  competition in which twelve international jurors selected twelve projects from over 200 submissions. This award is in partnership with ico-D, International Council of Design, and is one of the preeminent competitions in the world dedicated to women designers of visual communication. The award ceremony [6] took place in Florence, Italy at the Tepidarium del Roster in November 2019. All the winning projects were published in the fourth edition of their biannual AIAP Women in Design Award publication.

Additionally, a research paper on Placed was selected through a double-blind peer-review process and published at the Cumulus (International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design, and Media) conference [5]  held at the University of Lapland, Roveniemi, Finland in 2019.
