The Line Drawing Project

Participatory Computer Generated Portraits Project

Line Portrait Project is a series of computer-code generated portraits that detect the brightness and darkness of images and traces the outlines. A total of 367 people participated in the project and about 1000 portraits were generated over a period of 6 months. The participants were able to watch their portrait being generated in one single line and as a gesture of ‘thank you for your participation’, the program allowed them to download it once the line portrait version of their portrait was completed.

The most interesting part of the project to me was what came after the participants downloaded their portraits. Some of the participants sent me some follow-up images of what they have done with their line portraits.  They re-contextualized the portraits into various media such as posters, bookmarks, business cards, photographs, social media profiles, etc. The project has become a tool of user-driven design and art for the public to generate and distribute.
